Antimitochondrial Antibody-Negative Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
Clinics in Liver Disease, 2008Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is considered a classic autoimmune disease insofar as 95% of patients are seropositive for specific antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA). Yet it is still the case that the remaining 5% of patients have equivalent disease but test persistently AMA negative.

Laboratory-prepared and commercially obtained fluorescein-labeled rabbit antihuman IgG were compared in performing the antimitochondria antibody (AMA) assay. Identical results were obtained using either of the fluorescent antisera at protein concentrations of 1.5 mg/ml and 1:10 dilutions of patients' sera.

Antimitochondrial (pyruvate dehydrogenase) antibodies in leprosy
Journal of Clinical Immunology, 1994Sera from 69 patients with leprosy but without liver involvement were assayed for the presence of mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH)-specific autoantibodies by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting using PDH as an antigen and by enzymatic inhibition test.

Arthritis in Patients with Antimitochondrial Antibodies
Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, 1983We describe the clinical and radiographic findings in 15 women with antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) without clinical liver disease. Arthralgias appeared in their third or fourth decade and typically involved the small joints of the hands with periarticular swelling and cortical erosions. Few hand nodes, deformation, or sclerodactyly.
