A synergistic approach to anion antiport [PDF]

open access: yesDalton Transactions, 2011
A synergistic approach to Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) antiport has been demonstrated in POPC lipid bilayers using an ion selective electrode assay showing that, when using combinations of carriers each optimised for a particular component of the transport process, enhanced rates of transport are observed.

The role of plant cation/proton antiporter gene family in salt tolerance

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2018
Salinity is one of the major abiotic constraints to agriculture. The physiological and molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance have been studied in plants for many years. The regulation of osmosis and ion homeostasis is crucial.

Dissecting the proton transport pathway in electrogenic Na + /H + antiporters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Sodium/proton exchangers of the SLC9 family mediate the transport of protons in exchange for sodium to help regulate intracellular pH, sodium levels, and cell volume.

Bacterial and Plant Antiporters [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 1994
ABSTRACT Articles in this chapter emphasize the phenomenon of ion exchange across biomembranes. This topic has been of interest at least since 1947, when Hans Ussing articulated his model of ‘exchange diffusion’ to account for an unexpected elevation in the rate of 22Na+ efflux from skeletal muscle (Ussing, 1947).

Structure and substrate ion binding in the sodium/proton antiporter PaNhaP

open access: yeseLife, 2014
Sodium/proton antiporters maintain intracellular pH and sodium levels. Detailed structures of antiporters with bound substrate ions are essential for understanding how they work.

Effect of adaptogenic preparations on Na(+)/H(+)-antiporter function in plasma membrane of corn root cells under salinity conditions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Ukrainian Biochemical Journal, 2014
Salinity is a hard stress factor for plant organisms which negative effect is caused chiefly by sodium toxic for plants. Plant cells try to remove Na+ from their cytoplasm outside and to vacuolar space by secondary active Na+/H+-antiporters.

Simulating the function of sodium/proton antiporters [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2015
Significance Understanding the molecular nature of the function of transporters is of significant interest in view of their biological importance. However, the actual structure–function relationship of transporters is far from being clear. To advance this understanding, we simulated the activity of the Na

The functions of plant cation/proton antiporters

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2018
The cation/H+ exchange is a basic process in transmembrane transport. The acquisition of genome sequences has now established that plants possess genes encoding a large number of cation/proton antiporter 1 (CPA1) proteins, few of which have been ...

Employing information theoretic measures and mutagenesis to identify residues critical for drug-proton antiport function in Mdr1p of Candida albicans. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
By employing information theoretic measures, this study presents a structure and functional analysis of a multidrug-proton antiporter Mdr1p of Candida albicans.

Ca2+ pumps and Ca2+ antiporters in plant development

open access: yes, 2011
Calcium (Ca2+) efflux transporters remove Ca2+ from the cytosol of the cell either by transporting it out of the cell across the plasma membrane or into internal organelles.
