Neurolathyrism in Sub‐Saharan Africa—Assessing the Neurotoxic Risks of Lathyrus sativus Amid Drought and Food Security Challenges

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Representation of grass pea consumption in drought‐stricken sub‐Saharan Africa sustains nutrition, but excess β‐ODAP exposure due to multiple reasons triggers neurolathyrism, a progressive neurotoxic disorder. ABSTRACT Neurolathyrism is a progressive motor neuron disease due to the consumption of Lathyrus sativus (grass pea) over long periods.

Oligomerization of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Na+/H+ antiporter Nha1p: Implications for its antiporter activity

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 2005
The Na(+)/H(+) antiporter (Nha1p) from the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae plays an important role in intracellular pH and Na(+) homeostasis. Here, we show by co-precipitation of differently tagged Nha1p proteins expressed in the same cell that the yeast Nha1p l forms an oligomer.

Biochemical testing and pathology reveal rare cause of pediatric acute liver failure: Hyperornithinemia‐hyperammonemia‐homocitrullinuria syndrome

open access: yesJPGN Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Hyperornithinemia‐hyperammonemia‐homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome is a rare metabolic condition that can cause lethargy, ataxia, tachypnea, nausea, vomiting, seizures, coma, and acute liver failure. We present a 26‐month‐old female with acute liver failure who was diagnosed with HHH 1 week after admission. Histology revealed an acute hepatitic

Biochemistry and physiology of NhaP-type antiporters in Vibrio cholerae

open access: yes, 2014
Antiporters that exchange alkali cations (Na+ or K+) for protons play an important role in the physiology of all known bacterial species. They are involved in regulating intracellular pH and maintaining cellular volume as well as the formation of a ...

Distinct N-terminal regulatory domains of Ca2+/H+ antiporters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The regulation of intracellular Ca2+ levels is achieved in part by high-capacity vacuolar Ca2+/H+ antiporters. An N-terminal regulatory region (NRR) on the Arabidopsis Ca2+/H+ antiporter CAX1 (cation exchanger 1) has been shown previously to regulate Ca2+

Regulation of Ca2+ transient by PP2A in normal and failing heart

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2015
: Calcium transient in cardiomyocytes is regulated by multiple protein kinases and phosphatases. PP2A is a major protein phosphatase in the heart modulating Ca2+ handling through an array of ion channels, antiporters and pumps, etc.

Salt‐induced nutritional and metabolic shifts in halophytes: implications for food security

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Plant species vary in their response to salinity: some crops show a degree of salt tolerance, while halophytes – whether wild or cultivated – are characterized by a high capacity to thrive under saline conditions. Halophytes are considered a source of valuable secondary metabolites with potential economic value, yet they might also produce ...

Genome-wide identification and validation of Na+/H+ antiporter (NHX) gene family in finger millet under salt stress

open access: yesCurrent Research in Biotechnology
Salt stress poses a serious challenge to agricultural productivity, so it is important to identify stress resilient genes in underutilized cereals like finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.).

Kaempferol Attenuates Myocardial Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury by Suppressing Ferroptosis via the KEAP1–Nrf2–GPX4 Axis

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is characterized by cardiomyocyte death, excessive oxidative stress, inflammation, and ferroptosis, which collectively limit the efficacy of reperfusion therapy. In this study, we investigated whether kaempferol (KAE), a natural flavonol with antioxidative and antiinflammatory properties, could ...

ClC transporter activity modulates histidine catabolism in Lactobacillus reuteri by altering intracellular pH and membrane potential

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2019
Background Histamine is a key mediator of the anti-inflammatory activity conferred by the probiotic organism Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA 6475 in animal models of colitis and colorectal cancer. In L.
