HDAC9 is implicated in atherosclerotic aortic calcification and affects vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Aortic calcification is an important independent predictor of future cardiovascular events. We performed a genome-wide association meta-analysis to determine SNPs associated with the extent of abdominal aortic calcification (n = 9,417) or descending ...

The Influence of the Aortic Root Geometry on Flow Characteristics of a Bileaflet Mechanical Heart Valve [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Bileaflet mechanical heart valves have one of the most successful valve designs for more than 30 years. These valves are often used for aortic valve replacement, where the geometry of the aortic root sinuses may vary due to valvular disease and affect valve performance. Common geometrical sinus changes may be due to valve stenosis and insufficiency. In

Image quality and diagnostic accuracy of unenhanced SSFP MR angiography compared with conventional contrast-enhanced MR angiography for the assessment of thoracic aortic diseases

open access: yesEuropean Radiology, 2009
ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the image quality and diagnostic accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) unenhanced steady state free precession (SSFP) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for the evaluation of thoracic aortic diseases ...

Wearable Hyperspectral Photoplethysmography Allows Continuous Monitoring of Exercise‐Induced Hypertension

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A wearable hyperspectral photoplethysmography (HS‐PPG) is reported for continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring. The HS‐PPG module integrates an ultrathin double‐folded solid immersion grating microspectrometer (DFSIG‐µSPEC), achieving a high spectral resolution of 3.4 nm.

Safety and effectiveness of the sutureless integrated stented graft prosthesis in an animal model

open access: yesHeliyon
Background: Prolonged circulatory arrest time is an independent risk factor for postoperative adverse events of type A aortic dissection (TAAD) surgery. Further reduction of the circulatory arrest time is essential to improve surgical outcomes.

Case Report: Spontaneous acute hemopericardium

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine
Acute hemopericardium is generally produced by complications of interventional procedures or traumatisms to the chest wall. In absence of those antecedents, clinicians face an arduous process of etiological diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of

The Effects of Smoking on the Calcification of the Aortic Valve [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Calcific Aortic Valve Disease is responsible for approximately 28,000 deaths annually and the complete mechanism is not completely understood. The disease is known to be effected by an inflammatory response, osteogenic response and an oxidative stress ...

Cellular Mechanisms of Aortic Aneurysm Formation.

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2019
Aortic aneurysms are a common vascular disease in Western populations that can involve virtually any portion of the aorta. Abdominal aortic aneurysms are much more common than thoracic aortic aneurysms and combined they account for >25 000 deaths in the ...

Identification of CD38high Monocyte as a Candidate Diagnostic Biomarker and Therapeutic Target for Sepsis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers that CD38high monocytes discriminate sepsis and sterile inflammation and are associated with 28‐day mortality in bacterial sepsis. Targeting CD38 therapy reduces inflammatory response in monocytes and in sepsis mice model. Mechanistically, CD38‐HIF‐1α/glycolysis/MGO loop exacerbates sepsis‐induced immune dysregulation.

Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinases -1,-2,-3 and -9 in thoracic aortic diseases and acute myocardial ischemia

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2009
BackgroundMatrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) constitute a family of zinc-dependent proteases (endopeptidases) whose catalytic action is the degradation of the extracellular matrix components.
