Electrofocusing separates ampholytes such as proteins according to their isoelectric point. Different versions of the technique have been described under various unwieldy names such as isoelectric focusing or non-equilibrium pH-gradient electrophoresis, but we prefer to apply the term electrofocusing to any type of pH-gradient electrophoresis.
