Celer se iz Europe proširio u većinu zemalja gdje se uzgaja i koristi u svježoj potrošnji i preradi. Kod prehrane se koristi zadebljali korijen, peteljke i listovi, a postoje celer korjenaš (Apium graveolens var. rapaceum) i celer listaš (Apium graveolens var. secalinum). Najbolje uspijeva na dubokim i propusnim tlima neutralne reakcije.
