Tissue injury after lithium treatment in human and rat postnatal kidney involves glycogen synthase kinase 3β-positive epithelium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
It was hypothesized that lithium causes accelerated and permanent injury to the postnatally developing kidney through entry into epithelial cells of the distal nephron and inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β).

Cells Dynamically Adapt Their Nuclear Volumes and Proliferation Rates During Single to Multicellular Transitions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
It is currently not well understood how cells regulate basic properties, e.g., volume and mechanics within dense multicellular environments like tumors. Here, we show that different cell types of cancer and also normal cells largely decrease their nuclear and cellular volumes in emerging cell clusters and that this is partly driven by cell cycle shifts.

Aquaporins: important but elusive drug targets. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The aquaporins (AQPs) are a family of small, integral membrane proteins that facilitate water transport across the plasma membranes of cells in response to osmotic gradients.

Herba Lysimachiae Polysaccharide‐Modified Selenium Nanoparticles Alleviate Oxidative Injury in Kidney Stones via TOMM22‐Regulated Mitophagy Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
HLP‐SeNPs, a Lysimachia christinae polysaccharide‐modified selenium nanoparticle, treat kidney stones by downregulating TOMM22 expression, which reduces PINK1 translocation into mitochondria and promotes its retention on the outer mitochondrial membrane.

Neuromyelitis optica - an update: 2007-2009

open access: yesAnnals of Indian Academy of Neurology, 2009
Neuromyelitis optica is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. The discovery of a specific antibody (NMO IgG /aquaporin-4 antibody) in patients with this condition has led to a marked revival of research on the disease ...

COX-2 activity transiently contributes to increased water and NaCl excretion in the polyuric phase after release of ureteral obstruction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Udgivelsesdato: 2007-MayRelease of bilateral ureteral obstruction (BUO) is associated with reduced expression of renal aquaporins (AQPs), polyuria, and impairment of urine-concentrating capacity. Recently, we demonstrated that 24 h of BUO is associated

Equine models in translational medicine: A comparative approach to human health

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This diagram summarizes and contrasts rodent and equine models, outlining their strengths, limitations, and applications. Horses offer naturally occurring diseases, genetic and physiological similarities to humans, and suitability for longitudinal and clinical‐scale studies.

Deficiency of Carbonic Anhydrase II Results in a Urinary Concentrating Defect

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Carbonic anhydrase II (CAII) is expressed along the nephron where it interacts with a number of transport proteins augmenting their activity. Aquaporin-1 (AQP1) interacts with CAII to increase water flux through the water channel. Both CAII and aquaporin-

Protein quality control: the who's who, the where's and therapeutic escapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In cells the quality of newly synthesized proteins is monitored in regard to proper folding and correct assembly in the early secretory pathway, the cytosol and the nucleoplasm.

UT-B-deficient mice develop renal dysfunction and structural damage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Urea transporter UT-B is the major urea transporter in erythrocytes and the descending vasa recta in the kidney. In this study, we investigated the effects of long-term UT-B deficiency on functional and structural defect in the kidney of 16 ...
