The operational determination of wind stress on the Arctic ice pack

open access: yes, 1977
Abstract : The performance of routine FNWC sea level pressure analyses and forecasts in the Beaufort Sea is evaluated for driving an ice model. The geostrophic winds determined from the FNWC pressure fields are compared to geostrophic winds determined from the AIDJEX experiment observations.

Shape Memory Microneedle to Prevent Risks of Reproductive Hormone Therapy by Switching Sustained to Burst Release Under a Single Transdermal Insertion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A shape‐memory microneedle system enables reproductive hormone therapy through a single transdermal insertion. The X‐shaped device sustains follicle‐stimulating hormone release for three days, and mild heating restores the O shape to trigger burst human chorionic gonadotropin release.

Coagulative Granular Hydrogels with an Enzyme Catalyzed Fibrin Network for Endogenous Tissue Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Coagulative granular hydrogels are composed of packed thrombin‐functionalized microgels that catalyze the conversion of fibrinogen into a secondary fibrin network, filling the interstitial voids. This bio‐inspired approach stabilizes the biomaterial to match the robustness of bulk hydrogels without compromising injectability, mimicking the initial ...

Occurrence, habitat use, and behavior of seabirds, marine mammals, and arctic cod at the Pond Inlet ice edge. Arctic 35:28 –40

open access: yes, 1982
. In 1979, 17 species of birds were seen during studies near the Pond Inlet ice edge. Northern fulmars (Fulmurus glacialis), black-legged kittiwakes (Rissu triductylu), thick-billed murres (Uriu Zomvia), and black guillemots (Cepphus grylle) all avoided

Packed Hydrogel Microfibers as Scaffolds Supporting Dynamic Cellular Behavior and Biomaterial Inks in 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Packed hydrogel microfiber (PHM) materials consist of flexible and high aspect ratio hydrogel components that, as a bulk material, are simultaneously mechanically robust and dynamic. Cells cultured in or on PHM scaffolds can be influenced by topographical cues or interact with a dynamic environment that permits cell spreading and multicellular ...

Summer sea ice in the Northwestern Chukchi Sea observed in 2024 for the first time in 25 years

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The Arctic Ocean has seen a profound sea ice loss during the summer, with changes most pronounced in the Western Arctic. This has resulted in the Chukchi Sea, located just north of Bering Strait, being ice-free by the end of summer, i.e. September, since

Multidimensional Cellular Micro‐Compartments to Model Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Dormancy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is an understudied subtype of breast cancer that is susceptible to late recurrences. In this study, micro‐compartmentalization techniques spanning multiple dimensions, including 2D, pseudo‐3D, and 3D, are integrated to uncover the mechanisms underlying ILC dormancy, revealing the central role of p27Kip1.

Photothermal‐Activated Antibacterial Amyloid‐Polyphenol‐Iron Hydrogels for Synergistic Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We report a thermally triggered supramolecular hydrogel (LTFe) formed by Fe3+ and tannic acid on lysozyme amyloid fibrils. Fe3+ enables rapid gelation and photothermal transduction with an efficiency of 88.56%. The LTFe hydrogel exhibits excellent biocompatibility, potent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S.

Functional Blood‐Brain Barrier Crossing by Biomimetic M13 Phage Vectors for Targeted Neuronal Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the M13 bacteriophage as a biomimetic nanovector capable of crossing in vitro models of the blood–brain barrier. By exploiting peculiar transcellular pathways, M13 avoids lysosomal degradation and preserves its structural integrity and functionality.
