Identification and functional analysis of a sex-biased transcriptional factor Foxl2 in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2021
Transcription factor Foxl2 is an evolutionarily conserved gene playing pivotal roles in regulation of early ovarian differentiation and maintenance in animals. However, the Foxl2 gene has not been thoroughly studied in hermaphroditic scallops. In this study, we cloned and characterized a Foxl2 (designated as AiFoxl2) from the bay scallop Argopecten ...

Bioconversion of 13C-labeled microalgal phytosterols to cholesterol by the Northern Bay scallop, Argopecten irradians irradians

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2016
Bivalve mollusks lack de novo cholesterol biosynthesis capabilities and therefore rely upon dietary sources of sterols for rapid growth. Microalgae that constitute the main source of nutrition for suspension-feeding bivalves contain a diverse array of phytosterols, in most cases lacking cholesterol.

Overview of Bay Scallop (Argopecten irradians) Landings

1989
Bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) have been harvested along the Atlantic coast of North America since colonial times. Settlers on Cape Cod picked them up by hand at low tide (Belding 1910). In North Carolina also, shipping to northern markets in New York and Boston began as early as 1870 (Chestnut 1951).

Effects of environmental oxygen deficiency on embryos and larvae of bay scallop,Argopecten irradians irradians

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1995
The experimental results showed that: 1) The embryonic development of bay scallop is inhibited at a dissolved oxygen range of 1.38–3.64×10−3 at 23°C, and completely blocked below the lower limit. 2) The tolerance of larvae to anoxia increased with larval sizes and was related to their oxygen debt.

Growth and survival of reciprocal crosses between two bay scallops, Argopecten irradians concentricus Say and A. irradians irradians Lamarck

Aquaculture, 2007
A complete diallel cross between two bay scallop populations, Argopecten irradians concentricus Say (M) and A. irradians irradians Lamarck (C), was carried out. Growth and survival were compared among hybrids and pure populations. No significant difference in the shell length was found among the four groups on the first day of D-larvae.

Exposure of bay scallop Argopecten irradians to micro-polystyrene: Bioaccumulation and toxicity

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2020
Marine microplastic pollution poses a threat to aquatic organisms, including bivalves. In this study, we investigated the accumulation of microplastics and their elicited antioxidant stress response in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians. Scallops were exposed to 1 μm diameter micro-polystyrene (MP) beads at 10, 100, and 1000 beads/mL concentrations ...

Cytological comparison of gametogenesis of scallops,Argopecten irradians andChlamys farreri

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2002
Histological characteristics of gametogenesis of two kinds of scallops, gonochoric Chinese scallop,Chlamys farreri and hermaphroditic bay scallop,Argopecten irradians were investigated in this study. Spermatogenesis inC. farreri has different developmental stages: spermatogonia, primary spermatocyte, second spermatocyte, spermatid and spermatozoon.

Characterization of expressed sequence tag-derived single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians

Fisheries Science, 2009
We describe herein the discovery of 3905 putative single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the alignment of 4968 sequences in a bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians expressed sequenced tag (EST) database. The observed frequency of SNPs was estimated at one every 118.2 bp of contig sequences.

Functional allocation of Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) unveils thermotolerance in scallop Argopecten irradians irradians

Marine Environmental Research
Global warming has significantly impacted agriculture, particularly in animal husbandry and aquaculture industry. Rising ocean temperatures due to global warming are severely affecting shellfish production, necessitating an understanding of how shellfish cope with thermal stress.

Mitochondrial genome of Argopecten irradians reveals higher-level phylogenetic relationships in Anisomyaria

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2018
The complete mitochondrial genome of Argopecten irradians strain Zhongkehong was sequenced and annotated: it is 16,212 bp in length and contains twelve protein-coding genes (atp8 is absent, as in most species in Anisomyaria), two ribosomal RNA genes, and 21 transfer RNA genes (trnS is absent and there are two copies of trnF).
