An Epistemological Appraisal of Walton’s Argument Schemes

open access: yesInformal Logic, 2022
The article critically discusses Walton’s (and co-authors’) argument scheme approach to good argumentation. Four characteristics of Walton’s approach are presented: 1. Argument schemes provide normative requirements. 2.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Argumentation of the complex scheme for diagnosis and treatment of mastopathy in dogs

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Veterinary Medicine
Over the past 3 years, a 1.7-fold increase in the incidence of cystic fibrosis in bitches has been recorded. Currently, the problems of early diagnosis of mastopathy and effective treatment of mastopathy, which is one of the ways to reduce the incidence ...

IV Thrombolysis Facilitates Interventional Reperfusion in Non‐Cardioembolic but Not Cardioembolic Stroke

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) before thrombectomy for ischemic stroke may alter clot structure and procedural performance. We investigated how IVT relates to thrombectomy metrics across stroke etiologies. Methods We performed a time‐to‐event analysis of consecutive patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (acLVO ...

Prospective mathematics teachers’ argumentation structure when constructing a mathematical proof: The importance of backing

open access: yesBeta: Jurnal Tadris Matematika, 2019
[English]: This qualitative study with phenomenology design aims to investigate the use of backing and its relation to rebuttal and qualifier in prospective mathematics teachers’ (PMTs) argumentation when constructing a mathematical proof about algebraic

Advancing Age Modulates Associations Between Cognitive Impairment and Brain Volumes in Early MS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), but manifestations following the first demyelinating event are relatively unexplored. We investigated cross‐sectional associations between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–derived brain volumes and the presence of cognitive impairment outcomes five years after the first ...

On Arguments from Ignorance

open access: yesInformal Logic, 2018
The purpose of this paper is twofold: to give a good account of the argument from ignorance, with a presumptive argumentation scheme, and to raise issues on the work of Walton, the nature of abduction and the concept of epistemic closure.

Evaluating Arguments Based on Toulmin’s Scheme [PDF]

open access: yesArgumentation, 2005
Toulmin's scheme for the layout of arguments (1958) represents an influential tool for the analysis of arguments. The scheme enriches the traditional premises-conclusion model of arguments by distinguishing additional elements, like warrant, backing and rebuttal. The present paper contains a formal elaboration of Toulmin's scheme, and extends it with a
