Previous work by members of our group [1,2,3] suggested that in Artemia early development a considerable proportion of the mitochondria were stored in an inactive state in the yolk granules from which they were released during the developmental process, becoming active as power generators in the nauplii.

The eggs of the brine shrimp,Artemia salina, vary in colour from pale cream to dark brown. This variation is due to different amounts of haematin in the egg shells. Nauplii ofArtemiaare bright orange in colour owing to a carotenoid pigment, esterified astaxanthin. The same carotenoid is present in the eggs.

The crustacean Artemia franciscana is able to switch between two different reproductive ways controlled by environmental cues: adult females can produce embryos in their ovisac, coated with a thin cuticle shell layer, ready to hatch immediately or metabolically inactive eggs, namely cysts, which undergo diapause in a late gastrula stage.
