Engineering Nootkatone Biosynthesis in Artemisia annua

ACS Synthetic Biology, 2021
Nootkatone is a valuable sesquiterpene widely used in the food, fragrance, and flavor industries. Its price is very high due to its limited production in grapefruit peels or Alaska cypress heartwoods. Chemical synthesis of nootkatone uses heavy metals, highly flammable compounds, and strong oxidants, which cause severe damage to the environment.

Biosynthesis of artemisinin in Artemisia annua

Phytochemistry, 1987
Abstract The isotope ratios ( 3 H: 14 C) in arteannuin B and artemisinin biosynthesized in Artemisia annua from [4 R - 3 H 1 ,2- 14 C]-, [5- 3 H 2 ,2- 14 C]- and [2- 3 H 2 ,2- 14 C](3 RS )- mevalonate have revealed that two specific 1,2-hydride shifts take place during the oxidation and lactonization of the germacrane skeleton to yield ...

Artemisia annua L.

Pharmaceutisch Weekblad Scientific Edition, 1990
Artemisia annua L. contains artemisinin, an endoperoxide sesquiterpene lactone, mainly in its leaves and inflorescences. This compound and a series of derivatives have attracted attention because of their potential value as antimalarial drugs. In this review a survey of the currently available literature data is given. It includes phytochemical aspects,

Engineering scutellarin biosynthesis in Artemisia annua

Plant Cell Reports
Heterologous synthesis of scutellarin was successfully achieved in Artemisia annua by supplementing missing enzymes and optimizing flavone 6 hydroxylase in the biosynthetic pathway after identifying two crucial precursors in wild type plants. Artemisia annua, a plant renowned for its antimalarial properties, harbors a diverse array of terpenoids ...

Optimization of cryopreservation of Artemisia annua L. callus

Biotechnology Letters, 2003
Cryopreservation of callus tissue of Artimisia annua L. was optimized. Two lines of calli were precultured on MS medium with 5% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide, and protected by a cryoprotectant containing 15% (v/v) ethylene glycol, 15% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide, 30% (v/v) glycerol and 13.6% (w/v) sucrose.

Advances in Sesquiterpene Synthases (Cyclases) of Artemisia annua

Chinese Journal of Biotechnology, 2007
Artemisinin,a new and a very potent antimalarial drug, is produced by the plant Artemisia annua L. with a very low yield ranging from 0.01% to 0.8% on a dry-weight basis. This makes artemisinin an expensive drug. Several studies reported chemical synthesis of the artemisinin, but none of them seems a viable economical alternative compared with the ...
