Snustorr Defines Cuticle Elasticity in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesArchives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, Volume 121, Issue 3, March 2026.
Sir Wigglesworth postulated that insect cuticle hardening depended on the incorporation of lipids into the upper parts of the cuticle. We show that the delivery of these lipids needed for cuticle hardening requires the ABC transporter Snu in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster larva.

Transposon Ecology and the Octopus Genome

open access: yesBioEssays, Volume 48, Issue 3, March 2026.
Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile strands of DNA prevalent in octopus genomes. TE activity in the octopus brain might reflect an organism‐beneficial role in cognition; or could be a deleterious byproduct of TE parasitism. Viewing TEs from a genome‐ecology perspective generates novel predictions about differential expression levels across “genomic ...

Seasonal Dietary Changes Drive Adaptive Responses in the Gut Microbiota and Function of Myotis chinensis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
This research clarifies the synergistic adaptive interactions between seasonal foraging strategies and gut microbiome composition in Chinese chiropterans. Microbial diversity and community structure exhibit seasonal fluctuations, with functional metabolic pathways aligning to host reproductive cycles and hibernation physiology, thereby substantiating ...

Context‐Dependent Effects of Amino Acid Supplementation on Nestling Growth and Baseline Innate Immune Function

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
We experimentally supplemented great tit nestlings with methionine, leucine, or tap water to test how essential amino acids influence growth and immune function in forest and suburban habitats. Supplementation increased mass gain in smaller forest nestlings and enhanced lysis activity with methionine in suburban populations.

Improved COI taxonomic assignment workflow enhances detection of invertebrates in environmental DNA

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an increasingly popular and powerful tool in ecology, offering a non‐invasive method to assess biodiversity and monitor ecosystem health across diverse environments. While the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene is one of the most widely used markers for studying eukaryotic ...
