Novel Sources of aus Rice for Zinc Deficiency Tolerance Identified Through Association Analysis Using High-Density SNP Array

open access: yesRice Science, 2018
Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a major soil constraint limiting rice crop growth and yield, yet the genetic control of tolerance mechanisms is still poorly understood.

Ascorbic Acid and its Deficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
The purpose of this monograph was to collect into one paper as much as possible of the existing literature on the subject of ascorbic acid, and to present a comprehensive account of the studies on ascorbic acid metabolism which have established the symptoms of the deficiencies and pathology involved, the functions, and methods of prevention or control ...

Ascorbic acid deficiency in liver disease. [PDF]

open access: yesGut, 1976
Leucocyte ascorbic acid (LAA) levels were measured in 138 patients with liver disease. Significantly reduced levels were found in 37 patients with alcoholic liver disease (P less than 0-01) and 25 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (P less than 0-05).

Spherical Skin Model: Stratified Co‐Culture of Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes on Spherical Beads Toward Compound Screening

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Models of the human skin must combine the relevant biological contents and suitable biomaterials with the correct spatial organization. Performing compound screening on such in vitro models also requires fast and reproducible production methods of the models.

The Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip, or 2 × 2D = Pseudo‐3D—Approaching 3D Cell Morphology and Organization between Two Opposing 2D Substrates with Cell‐Adhesive Protein Micropatterns

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a novel 3D cell patterning and culture platform. The “Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip” (FC‐Chip) consists of two opposing track‐etched membranes, creating a pseudo‐3D microenvironment for the cells in between. By providing the membranes with micropatterned cell‐adhesive islands of varying geometries and sizes, the FC‐Chip enables control over cell ...

An Unexpected Case of Scurvy in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient

open access: yesCase Reports in Nephrology and Dialysis, 2017
This case describes an obese adult male peritoneal dialysis patient who presented with a pruritic follicular rash. Nutrient deficiency was not suspected initially in this case because there was no history of protein-calorie malnutrition, but the patient ...

Hybrid Nanofibers for Multimodal Accelerated Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fabrication of wound healing scaffolds based on biocompatible nanofibers. Nanofibers offering high surface area, flexibility, and biocompatibility significantly improved the healing outcome in vivo. Histological, immunological, and anti‐inflammatory markers are noticeably better in treated wounds.

Characterization of an Injectable Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin Hydrogel for Growth Factor Delivery in an Orthopedic Application

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...
