Banks are viewed as information processors; they exist because of their advantage in extracting the surplus associated with the reusability of borrower-specific information.

Monetary asset quality and substitutability
Journal of Economics and Business, 1993Abstract This paper utilizes a user-cost-dependent direct utility function to estimate elasticities of substitution (ES) between monetary assets. Unlike other ES studies, the generalized Fechner-Thurstone (GFT) utility function employed incorporates changes in monetary asset quality. The ES results show low substitutability between assets.
