Identification of new genes associated with melanoma

open access: yes, 2011
Purpose: Repeated failures in melanoma therapy made clear that the molecular mechanisms leading to melanoma are still poorly understood. Here, we aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the transcriptional profiles and signaling pathways ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Early Childhood Cholestasis, Causes & Associated Factors in Children

open access: yesDiyala Journal of Medicine
Background: Newborn cholestasis is explained as a persisted rise of the serum conjugated bilirubin outside the first two weeks of life. There are many etiologies of newborn cholestasis that must be differentiated since immediate interference may give a ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Factor V Arg306->Gly Mutation Is Not Associated with Activated Protein C Resistance and Is Rare in Taiwanese Chinese

open access: yes, 2009
Polymerase chain reaction amplification followed by BstO1 enzyme digestion and DNA sequencing was employed to detect the mutation of factor V gene. The subjects consisted of 105 venous thrombophilic patients and 183 healthy controls. Only one patient was

Multilevel Analysis of Community Acquired Pneumonia Among 2‐59 Months Old Children in Awi Zone, Northwest Ethiopia: A Community‐Based Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesHealth Science Reports
Background and Aims Worldwide, pneumonia was responsible for about 740,180 deaths in children under 5 year, accounting for 14% of all deaths in 2019. The purpose of this study was to identify associated risk factors of community acquired pneumonia among ...
