Influence of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) wood age on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metal accumulation in smoked atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias)

open access: yesScientific African
Smoking is a widely used method of fish preservation that can enhance flavour but may also introduce harmful contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals.

Monitoring Fish Bacterial Pathogens of Wild Fish Species From the South China Sea by Applying Next‐Generation Sequencing on Gill Tissue

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT The classic epidemiological triangle model of host—environment—pathogen is recently being reshaped into a tetrahedron, with the growing understanding of the importance of the microbiome in this array. The gills, being a gateway into the fish body, bearing an important role in fish homeostasis, host a complex microbiome that reflects the ...

Hormonal regulation of the phenotype into environmentally appropriate pace‐of‐life syndromes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 16-29, January 2025.
Abstract The risk of predation is an important driver that tailors life histories in various ways. Using an evolutionary model based on hormonal control, we study how different predation regimes affect adaptive risk‐taking and growth in fish populations.

Northeast Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias): growth pattern and age validation in Northern Iberian waters

open access: yes, 2019
During the last years, chub mackerel has increased its abundance at its northernmost distribution limit (Northern Iberian waters), possibly influenced by oceanographic shifts, with potential impact on other important pelagic fisheries and the ecosystem. Fishery advice has been recently recommended within ICES to be performed in the near future.

Genome Manipulation Advances in Selected Aquaculture Organisms

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT With the rising global demand for seafood and the challenges posed by overfishing and climate change, the aquaculture sector has become increasingly important in providing high‐quality protein for human consumption. Although traditional selection breeding programs have made great strides in genetic improvement of aquaculture species over the ...
