Оn the Physical Cause of North-Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

open access: yes, 2023
It is shown, that the North Atlantic oscillation corresponds to the difference between the values of the near-surface air temperature calculated on the basis of the regression model with insolation contrast as a predictor and the actual long-term changes in the near-surface air temperature.

Weaker connection between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Indian summer rainfall since the mid-1990s

open access: yesAtmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters, 2018
Previous studies have shown that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) can play an important role in modulating the variability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) over a 50–60-yr timescale.

Mediterranean overflow water in the North Atlantic and its multidecadal variability

open access: yesTellus: Series A, Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2020
The Mediterranean overflow water is one of the most important intermediate-depth water masses in the North Atlantic. To investigate its properties a pre-industrial simulation with the earth system model EC-Earth is used.

Multidecadal change of winter cyclonic activity in the Mediterranean associated with AMO and PDO

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2017
The paper is devoted to analysis of the cold half-year (October to March) frequency of cyclones in the Mediterranean-Black Sea region associated with the global processes in the ocean-atmosphere system - the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic

Response of North Pacific and North Atlantic decadal variability to weak global warming

open access: yesAdvances in Climate Change Research, 2018
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) are the two dominant low-frequency modes in the climate system. This research focused on the response of these two modes under weak global warming.

Asymmetric Modulation of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on ENSO Amplitude

open access: yesClimate Dynamics
Abstract We investigate the asymmetric modulation of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) on El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude using long-term observational and reanalysis datasets. Results show that the modulation of the AMO on ENSO amplitude exhibits significant asymmetry in both eastern Pacific (EP) and central Pacific (CP)

Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and its manifestations in the Atlantic-European region

open access: yesPhysical Oceanography, 2008
We present a brief survey of the works devoted to the investigation of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, i.e., of the quasiperiodic variations of sea-surface temperature in the North Atlantic with typical time scales of 50–100 yr. This oscillation is a manifestation of the natural variability in the ocean-atmosphere system.

Impact of Atlantic multidecadal oscillations on India/Sahel rainfall and Atlantic hurricanes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2006
Prominent multidecadal fluctuations of India summer rainfall, Sahel summer rainfall, and Atlantic Hurricane activity have been observed during the 20th century. Understanding their mechanism(s) will have enormous social and economic implications. We first use statistical analyses to show that these climate phenomena are coherently linked.

The Teleconnection of the Tropical Atlantic to Indo-Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures on Inter-Annual to Centennial Time Scales: A Review of Recent Findings

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2016
In this paper, the teleconnections from the tropical Atlantic to the Indo-Pacific region from inter-annual to centennial time scales will be reviewed. Identified teleconnections and hypotheses on mechanisms at work are reviewed and further explored in a ...

Increased persistence of warm and wet winter weather in recent decades in north-western Europe

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Changes in weather persistence have important implications for flood risk and regional climate resilience. In recent decades, the winter North Atlantic Oscillation index has shown a sustained shift toward more strongly positive values, exceeding the ...
