Bioluminescence detection of ATP release mechanisms in epithelia

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1998
Autocrine and paracrine release of and extracellular signaling by ATP is a ubiquitous cell biological and physiological process. Despite this knowledge, the mechanisms and physiological roles of cellular ATP release are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that epithelia release ATP under basal and stimulated conditions by using a newly designed and ...

Mechanisms of ATP Release and Inactivation

2012
Nearly, all cells from very early life‐forms release ATP. ATP release is recognized throughout the phylogenetic tree, being present in bacteria, yeasts, plants, prokaryotic single-celled organisms, and in invertebrates. In mammals ATP release is found in neurons and secretory cells, astrocytes, muscle cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, macrophages,

[Neurotransmitter ATP and cytokine release].

Nihon yakurigaku zasshi. Folia pharmacologica Japonica, 2000
Microglia, the resident macrophages in the central nervous system (CNS), are rapidly activated upon trauma or ischemic injury, releasing cytokines and undertaking tissue repair. Recent studies have indicated that CNS immune cells express ionotropic P2X and metabotropic P2Y purinoceptors and undergo functional changes in response to extracellular ATP ...

Mechanosensitive ATP release in the lungs

2019
ATP is widely known to be an energy carrier within cells, but outside of the cell, it acts as an extracellular signaling molecule. Upon binding to purinergic receptors, extracellular ATP initiates the purinergic signaling to regulate certain physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Temperature dependence of ATP release from "caged" ATP.

Acta biochimica et biophysica; Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, 1986
The ATP release from "caged" ATP by laser flash was determined at different temperatures and pH values. We measured the time resolved absorbance changes of the coloured intermediate, which is involved in the photolytic process. The linearity of the Arrhenius curves suppose only one process and the calculated activation enthalpies (around 55 kJ/mole ...

Regulation of cellular ATP release.

Transactions of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, 2008
Epithelial cells exhibit regulated release of ATP. Once outside of the cell, ATP in nanomolar concentrations functions as an autocrine/paracrine signal modulating a broad range of cell and organ functions through activation of purinergic receptors in the plasma membrane. The mechanisms responsible for ATP release have not been defined.
