Severe postoperative wound healing disturbance in a patient with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency: the impact of augmentation therapy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Wound healing disturbance is a common complication following surgery, but the underlying cause sometimes remains elusive. A 50-year-old Caucasian male developed an initially misunderstood severe wound healing disturbance following colon and abdominal ...

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Sustained high expression of human FVII following AAV8-mediated gene delivery in mice

open access: yesMolecular Therapy: Methods & Clinical Development
Factor VII (FVII) deficiency is a rare bleeding disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1:300,000–500,000 individuals. We explored whether adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene therapy can achieve durable and functional expression of human FVII (

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Corticosteroid therapy augments gastroduodenal permeability to sucrose

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Gastroenterology, 1998
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether corticosteroid therapy alters gastroduodenal mucosal permeability and whether permeability alteration is associated with macroscopic mucosal damage.Eight patients taking oral corticosteroid therapy (total prednisone-equivalent dose, 1.5+/-0.1 g; duration, approximately 30 days), nine patients with
