Provedeno je kariološko-citogenetičko istraživanje na europskim autohtonim vrstama rakova Austropotamobius pallipes i A. torrentium iz porodice Astacidae. Vrsta A. pallipes ima diploidan broj kromosoma 2n=168, a vrsta A. torrentium ima 2n=164. Formula kariotipa za vrstu A. pallipes je 148m+18sm+2a, a za vrstu A. torrentium je 148m+16sm.
