Paleontological Tests: Human-like Intelligence is not a Convergent Feature of Evolution [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
We critically examine the evidence for the idea that encephalization quotients increase with time. We find that human-like intelligence is not a convergent feature of evolution. Implications for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence are discussed.

Phase transition from egalitarian to hierarchical societies driven by competition between cognitive and social constraints [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Empirical evidence suggests that social structure may have changed from hierarchical to egalitarian and back along the evolutionary line of humans. We model a society subject to competing cognitive and social navigation constraints. The theory predicts that the degree of hierarchy decreases with encephalization and increases with group size.

MAVS expressed by hematopoietic cells is critical for control of West Nile virus infection and pathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
West Nile virus (WNV) is the most important cause of epidemic encephalitis in North America. Innate immune responses, which are critical for control of WNV infection, are initiated by signaling through pathogen recognition receptors, RIG-I and MDA5, and ...

Predicted selective increase of cortical magnification due to cortical folding [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
The cortical magnification matrix M is introduced founded on a notion similar to that of the scalar cortical magnification factor M. Unlike M, this matrix is suitable to describe anisotropy in cortical magnification, which is of particular interest in the highly gyrified human cerebral cortex. The advantage of our tensor method over other surface-based

Modeling the influence of TH1 and TH2 type cells in autoimmune diseases [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2000
A sharp TH1/TH2 dichotomy has often been used to define the effects of cytokines on autoimmune diseases. However contradictory results in recent research indicate that the situation may be more complex. We build here a simple mathematical model aimed at settling the contradictions.
