α-Hydroxyketone Synthesis and Sensing by Legionella and Vibrio
Bacteria synthesize and sense low molecular weight signaling molecules, termed autoinducers, to measure their population density and community complexity. One class of autoinducers, the α-hydroxyketones (AHKs), is produced and detected by the water-borne

Molecular radio jamming: autoinducer analogs.
Synthesis of an N-acyl-homoserine lactone (N-acyl-HSL) analog library yields agonists and antagonists of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum-sensing system. Active compounds also reveal heterogeneity in the lactone ring binding pockets of N-acyl-HSL-activated transcription factors.

Mechanism of Vibrio cholerae Autoinducer-1 Biosynthesis
Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the disease cholera, uses a cell to cell communication process called quorum sensing to control biofilm formation and virulence factor production. The major V. cholerae quorum-sensing signal CAI-1 has been identified as (S)-3-hydroxytridecan-4-one, and the CqsA protein is required for CAI-1 production.

The Vibrio harveyi Master Quorum-sensing Regulator, LuxR, a TetR-type Protein is Both an Activator and a Repressor: DNA Recognition and Binding Specificity at Target Promoters [PDF]
Quorum sensing is the process of cell-to-cell communication by which bacteria communicate via secreted signal molecules called autoinducers. As cell population density increases, the accumulation of autoinducers leads to co-ordinated changes in gene ...

Impact of simulated microgravity conditions on bacterial cell-cell communication utilizing Vibrio fischeri [PDF]
For bacteria to thrive in stressful environments, they must communicate with one another through Quorum Sensing (QS), or chemical signals released to the environment. QS allows bacteria to sense the environment and regulate their cell number and behavior

Effect of a chemical analogue of autoinducers of microbial anabiosis on the Ca2+ response of mycelial fungi [PDF]
The microbial alkylhydroxybenzenes (AHB), which are anabiosis autoinducers also termed d1 factors, participate in the stress response of mycelial fungi, as determined from changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration.

A Tale of Two Theories: Using an Engineered Strain of E. coli to Bridge the Gap Between Quorum Sensing and Diffusion Sensing [PDF]
Cooperation is a trait that is found at all levels of biological organization. Interestingly, cooperation appears to occur in bacteria that produce small, easily diffusible molecules called autoinducers.

Efficiency Sensing – was messenAutoinduktoren wirklich? [PDF]
We propose that bacteria release diffusible autoinducers as proxies for testing the efficiency of producing extracellular effectors (efficiency sensing).
