Bacterial Walls, Peptidoglycan Hydrolases, Autolysins, and Autolysis

Microbial Drug Resistance, 1996
ABSTRACT Knowledge of the chemistry, ultrastructure, biosynthesis, assembly, and function of bacterial cell walls has expanded enormously since the opening of this field of research approximately 40 years ago, primarily by the early work of Milton Salton.

Differentiation of Bacterial Autolysins by Zymogram Analysis

Analytical Biochemistry, 2001
The use of zymograms in which the bacterial cell wall heteropolymer peptidoglycan is incorporated into the resolving gel of SDS-PAGE has led to the identification of various SDS stable peptidoglycan hydrolases (autolysins). To examine the specificity of autolysins with respect to O-acetylated peptidoglycan, a discontinuous SDS-PAGE system has been ...

Molecular characterization of an autolysin-defective mutant of Streptococcuspneumoniae

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1986
The mutant gene lyt-4 of the autolysin-defective mutant R6ly4-4 of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which synthesized a temperature-sensitive autolytic enzyme, has been cloned in Escherichia coli. The nucleotide defect of the lyt-4 mutation has been characterized as a CG to TA transition.

Mutants of Streptococcus pneumoniae That Contain a Temperature-sensitive Autolysin

Microbiology, 1986
Two mutants of Streptococcus pneumoniae deficient in autolysin activity produced a protein that showed immunological identity with the N-acetyl-muramyl-L-alanyl-amidase present in the wild-type strain, when tested with antiserum obtained against this enzyme. The protein was produced by the mutant cultures grown either at 37 degrees C or at 30 degrees C,

Isolation of protoplasts by means of a ?species-specific? autolysine inChlamydomonas

Protoplasma, 1976
Prior to fusion, gametes ofChlamydomonas reinhardii discard their cell walls. This naturally occuring phenomenon has provided the basis for a method of protoplast isolation from both gametes and vegetative cells within the genusChlamydomonas. When synchronized cultures of compatibleChlamydomonas gametes are mixed it is possible, after removal of the ...

Cloning and expression of the pneumococcal autolysin gene in Escherichia coli

Molecular and General Genetics MGG, 1985
A 7.5 kb BclI-fragment of Streptococcus pneumoniae DNA has been cloned in Escherichia coli HB101 using pBR322 as a vector. The new plasmid (pGL30) of 12.0 kb expresses a protein that has been characterized by biochemical, immunological and genetic methods as the inactive form (E-form) of the pneumococcal N-acetyl-muramyl-L-alanyl amidase (EC 3.5.1.28).

Coordination of Autolysins during cell division in Caulobacter crescentus

2020

Algal Wall-Degrading Enzymes — Autolysines

1981
The structure of the walls of cells which grow, differentiate, and fuse with other cells must be changeable during ontogenesis. An obvious expression of structural change is lysis of the cell wall. Normal (nonpathological) cell wall autolysis seems to appear during different events in the life cycle of plants : active growth and vegetative ...
