Shot Noise Suppression in Avalanche Photodiodes

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2005
We identify a new shot noise suppression mechanism in a thin (~100 nm) heterostructure avalanche photodiode. In the low-gain regime the shot noise is suppressed due to temporal correlations within amplified current pulses. We demonstrate in a Monte Carlo simulation that the effective excess noise factors can be <1, and reconcile the apparent ...

Selective Solar CO2 Conversion into Ethanol Using Atomic‐Scale Copper Clusters Anchored π‐extended Poly(heptazine imide)

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 32, 8 June 2026.
Atomic‐scale copper clusters anchored on π‐extended poly(heptazine imide) enable selective, sacrificial‐agent‐free solar conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to ethanol. The catalyst promotes interfacial charge separation and stabilizes key carbon‐carbon coupling intermediates, providing a molecularly defined platform for direct C2 fuel synthesis under ...

Intercomparison of CL31 and CL51 ceilometers and impact of installation angle on cloud base height measurement agreement

open access: yesWeather, Volume 81, Issue 6, Page 191-199, June 2026.
Lowest‐layer cloud base height (CBH) measurements obtained between July 2018 and December 2019 from four ceilometers at the Korea Standard Meteorological Observatory were compared to determine how ceilometer installation angle differentially affects CBH measurements.

Therapeutic Peptide SS‐31 Modulates Membrane Binding and Aggregation of α‐Synuclein and Restores Impaired Mitochondrial Function

open access: yesChemical Biology &Drug Design, Volume 107, Issue 6, June 2026.
SS‐31 (Elamipretide) inhibits α‐synuclein aggregation on the membranes and emerges as a promising therapeutic candidate against mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson's disease. ABSTRACT Membrane binding and aggregation properties of α‐synuclein are closely associated with Parkinson's disease and a class of related syndromes named as synucleinopathy ...

Al0.52In0.48P avalanche photodiodes for soft X-ray spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The performance of Al0.52In0.48P avalanche photodiodes was assessed as soft X-ray detectors at room temperature. The effect of the avalanche gain improved the energy resolution and an energy resolution (FWHM) of 682 eV is reported for 5.9 keV X ...

Full band Monte Carlo simulation of AlInAsSb digital alloys

open access: yesInfoMat, 2020
Avalanche photodiodes fabricated from AlInAsSb grown as a digital alloy exhibit low excess noise. In this article, we investigate the band structure‐related mechanisms that influence impact ionization.

Vacuum phototriodes for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter endcap

open access: yes, 2004
The measurement of scintillation light from the lead tungstate crystals of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) poses a substantial technical challenge, particularly in the endcap regions, where the radiation levels are ...

An Improved Design for Solar-Blind AlGaN Avalanche Photodiodes

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
To enhance the impact ionization coefficient of holes, we proposed an improved solar-blind AlGaN avalanche photodiode (APD) structure by using a low-Al-composition AlGaN multiplication layer and a filter based on periodic photonic crystal together with a
