Avoidance behavior and brain monoamines in fish
Brain Research, 2005The crucian carp performs a typical avoidance behavior when exposed to olfactory cues from injured skin of conspecifics. They swim rapidly to the bottom and hide in available material. This work examines the effects of skin extract exposure and availability of hiding material on this behavior, and concomitant changes in brain monoaminergic activity in ...

See and avoidance behaviors for autonomous navigation
SPIE Proceedings, 2004Recent advances in many multi-discipline technologies have allowed small, low-cost fixed wing unmanned air vehicles (UAV) or more complicated unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) to be a feasible solution in many scientific, civil and military applications. Cameras can be mounted on-board of the unmanned vehicles for the purpose of scientific data gathering,

Avoidance behavior and genetic predisposition to hypertension
Behavioral and Neural Biology, 1981Avoidance/escape behavior, genetic predisposition to hypertension, and elevations in blood pressure were examined in Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) and Dahl salt-resistant (DR) rats. The mean blood pressure of DS rats fed a high-salt diet (186 mm Hg) was significantly higher than DS rats on the low-salt diet (130 mm Hg).

The modification of avoidance learning pain behaviors
Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 1982This study demonstrates a procedural innovation designed to modify chronic pain behaviors which have been acquired through avoidance learning. Discussion focuses on avoidance learning as a seldom-investigated factor in the acquisition and maintenance of chronic pain behaviors.

Cognitions and courage in the avoidance behavior of acrophobics
Behaviour Research and Therapy, 1992Fifty subjects (29 fearless and 21 fearful) were tested in a potentially acrophobia-inducing situation, and their avoidance behavior and self-reported fear were noted. Subjects also completed various scales intended to measure their fearfulness and thoughts in hypothetical height-phobic, social-phobic and nonphobic situations.

Genetic selection for avoidance behavior in the rat
Behavior Genetics, 1979Long-Evans rats were selectively bred for over 20 generations using two behavioral criteria: (1) limited responding to the warning signal during ten pretest trials and (2) either good or poor avoidance behavior during 60 avoidance training trials in a two-way shuttlebox.

Stimulation of avoidance behavior by buprenorphine in rats
Psychopharmacology, 1983The effects of buprenorphine and morphine on rates and temporal patterns of avoidance responding were studied in rats. Responding was maintained under a schedule of electric shock avoidance with 30-s response-shock and shock-shock intervals during 4-h sessions.
