Performance of Screw Piles Under Axial Loading

open access: yesGeotechnics
Piles with continuous helix (referred to herein as “screw pile”) is a new configuration of helical piles. It features a continuous helix spiraling several pitches around a smooth shaft forming a “threaded shaft”.

A new model for predicting the axial compression capacity of reinforced concrete cylinders strengthened with CFRP [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Civil Engineering
Numerous scholars have identified the shortcomings of imprecise terminology and substantial computational inaccuracies in the current models for predicting the axial compression capacity of CFRPstrengthened reinforced concrete (RC) cylinders.

Finite element prediction of the ultimate axial load capacity of V-section band clamps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Band clamps with a flat bottomed V-section are used to connect a pair of circular flanges to provide a joint with significant axial strength. Despite the wide application of Vband clamps, their behaviour is not fully understood and the ultimate axial ...

Uncertainty Analysis of Axial Pile Capacity in Layered Soils by the Piezocone Penetration Test

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
This study presented a framework for uncertainty analysis of the ultimate axial bearing capacity of piles evaluated by the UniCone method in layered soils.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Classical and numerical approaches to determining V-section band clamp axial stiffness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
V-band clamp joints are used in a wide range of applications to connect circular flanges, for ducts, pipes and the turbocharger housing. Previous studies and research on V-bands are either purely empirical or analytical with limited applicability on the ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Use of Pile Driving Analysis for Assessment of Axial Load Capacity of Piles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Driven piles are commonly used in foundation engineering. Pile driving formulae, which directly relate the pile set per blow to the capacity of the pile, are commonly used to decide whether an installed pile will have the designed capacity.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

An Investigation Into the Axial Capacity of Hot‐Rolled I‐Section Steel Columns Using Machine Learning

open access: yesEngineering Reports
Hot‐rolled steel (HRS) is a fundamental material in structural engineering, notable for its mechanical properties and diverse applications. This study focused on I‐sections (ISMB) of varying dimensions, conducting both experimental and numerical ...
