Periodic void formation in chevron folds

open access: yes, 2014
An energy-based model is developed to describe the periodic formation of voids/saddle reefs in hinge zones of chevron folds. Such patterns have been observed in a series of experiments on layers of paper, as well as in the field.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Measurement and evaluation of swirl-type flow in labyrinth seals of conventional turbine stages [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
The effects of load factor and rotor eccentricity were determined on flow conditions in test series for two stages. The results indicate that swirl-type entry flow follows the rules of potential swirl.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Exploratory Biomechanical Comparison of Three Posterior Pelvic Ring Fixation Strategies in a Standardized Tile C1.2 Synthetic Model

open access: yesDiagnostics
Background: Tile C1.2 pelvic ring injuries are characterized by combined rotational and vertical instability and require reliable posterior stabilization.

The behavior of ultra-high-strength reinforced concrete columns under axial and cyclic lateral loads

open access: yesHBRC Journal, 2016
In general Ultra High Strength Concrete (UHSC) is a new class of concrete that has been developed in recent decades. UHSC is characterized by extraordinary mechanical and durability properties. The UHSC-Matrix is very brittle material behavior.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Distal osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone for the correction of hallux valgus: comparison of the sagittal stability of two percutaneous techniques—a cadaveric study

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2023
Background Distal first metatarsal osteotomy is used to correct mild or moderate hallux valgus (HV). We designed a cadaveric study to compare the resistance to axial load between two percutaneous distal first metatarsal osteotomies: Bösch osteotomy and ...

Energy dissipation and equivalent damping of RC columns subjected to biaxial bending: an investigation based in experimental results [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The cyclic behaviour of reinforced concrete columns have been object of many experimental studies in the recent past years. However, the experimental studies on the biaxial response of RC columns are still limited.
