Orientationally invariant indices of axon diameter and density from diffusion MRI

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2010
This paper proposes and tests a technique for imaging orientationally invariant indices of axon diameter and density in white matter using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging.

Mapping mean axon diameter and axonal volume fraction by MRI using temporal diffusion spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2014
Mapping mean axon diameter and intra-axonal volume fraction may have significant clinical potential because nerve conduction velocity is directly dependent on axon diameter, and several neurodegenerative diseases affect axons of specific sizes and alter axon counts.

Retinal ganglion cell axon diameter spectrum of the cat: Mean axon diameter varies according to retinal position

Visual Neuroscience, 1994
AbstractAxon diameters of retinal ganglion cells were measured from electron micrographs of the nerve fiber layer of the cat. Three adult retinae were examined which had mean axonal diameters of 1.18 ± 0.86 (n= 5553), 1.12 ± 0.79 (n= 7265), and 1.47 ±1.11 μm (n= 10,867).

Axcaliber: A method for measuring axon diameter distribution from diffusion MRI

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, 2008
The diameter of a myelinated nerve axon is directly proportional to its conduction velocity, so the axon diameter distribution helps determine the channel capacity of nervous transmission along fascicles in the central (CNS) and peripheral nervous ...

Growth of lobster giant axons: Correlation between conduction velocity and axon diameter

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1976
AbstractThe conduction velocity and axon diameter of medial and lateral giant axons in lobsters was followed during growth from early juvenile (13 mm) to adult (250 mm) forms. In both axons, conduction velocity increased more than 4‐fold in the growth period examined.

Nodal axon diameter correlates linearly with internodal axon diameter in spinal roots of the cat

Neuroscience Letters, 1981
Nodal and internodal axon diameters of individual myelinated nerve fibres were measured electron microscopically in fibre samples from serially sectioned L7 ventral and dorsal spinal root of young adult cats. Axon cross-sectional area at the node of Ranvier in axons more than 4 micrometer in diameter was reduced to less than 20% of its internodal value.

Axon diameter distributions across the monkey's optic nerve

Neuroscience, 1988
The distribution of axons according to diameter has been examined in the optic nerve of old world monkeys. Axon diameters were measured from electron micrographs, and histograms were constructed at regular intervals across a section through the optic nerve to reveal the local axon diameter distribution.

Axon diameters and intradural trajectories of the dural innervation in the rat

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2004
AbstractNeurophysiological studies have characterized the sensory responses of primary afferent nociceptors that innervate the intracranial dura. The present study used anatomical methods to examine in greater detail the axonal trajectories within the dura, as well as the axonal size distribution of the dural innervation.

Locust Motoneurons: Bursting Activity Correlated with Axon Diameter

Science, 1972
A group of abdominal motoneurons in the locust can be driven by either or both of two central neuronal oscillators of different characteristic frequencies. Much of the motor cells' complex activity can be explained by the varying strengths of activation from these two rhythmic sources and by a cell-to-cell gradation in sensitivity to driving inputs, a ...

Distribution of axons according to diameter in the monkey's optic tract

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1987
AbstractThe distribution of axonal diameters in the optic tract of Old World monkeys was examined by light and electron microscopy. Axon diameters were measured in samples of 100 axons taken from several locations in a cross section of the tract about 5 mm behind the optic chiasm.
