Small-Diameter Nonmyelinated Axons in the Primate Corpus Callosum
Archives of Neurology, 1980The splenium of the corpus callosum of a primate (Macaca mulatta), examined with the electron microscope, was found to contain both myelinated and nonmyelinated axons. The majority of nonmyelinated axons had diameters of less tha 0.25 micron. On the basis of this diameter distribution, it is expected that many callosal axons conduct impulses at ...

Quantitative Diameter Analysis of Lingual Nerve Axons in Man
Journal of Dental Research, 1986Previous studies on axon counts and fiber-diameter spectra in lingual nerves have been carried out only on animal models. This study reports an histological investigation on a series of 20 lingual nerves removed post mortem from human subjects. The results show wide variation in the myelinated fiber counts — a variation which does not appear to be ...

Relation between Optic Nerve Axon Number and Axon Diameter to Scleral Canal Area
Ophthalmology, 1991To determine whether there are more axons present in eyes with larger optic discs, the authors studied 16 eyes from 16 individuals whose eyes were donated for corneal transplantation. For each nerve, the axon count, axon diameter, and scleral canal area was measured. Total axon count decreased with age. Mean axon diameter increased with age.

The normal human optic nerve. Axon count and axon diameter distribution.
Ophthalmology, 1989Computerized image analysis was used to determine the normal axonal count and axon diameter distribution in 12 normal human eyes. Mean axon count per nerve was 969,279 +/- 239,740 and mean axon diameter was 0.72 +/- 0.07 micron. Multiple linear regression disclosed 4909 axons lost yearly (P = 0.08).

Intermittent myelination of small-diameter sciatic axons inXenopus laevis
Journal of Neurocytology, 1985Nerve fibres from the sciatic nerve of apparently normal Xenopus laevis were examined in teased preparations of living material and in series of cross-sections. Small-diameter fibres were found that were myelinated in a spatially intermittent fashion.

Neurofilament phosphorylation and axon diameter in the squid giant fibre system
Neuroscience, 1999Electron energy loss spectroscopic analysis of squid giant axons in a phosphorus energy window yielded bright signals, which were shown to originate from highly phosphorylated neurofilaments. The frequency and distribution of these signals were analysed at defined intervals in cross-sections of the giant axon, starting from its origin in the stellate ...

A study of axonal diameters and areas in lumbosacral roots and nerves in the rat
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1984AbstractThere has been debate as to whether there is a size difference between central and peripheral processes of dorsal root ganglion cells. In the present study, the mean areas of myelinated and unmyelinated fibers are measured as 27.8 μm2 and 0.55 μm2, respectively, in peripheral nerves and 13.72 μm2 and 0.14 μm2 in dorsal roots.

Whole brain in vivo axonal diameter mapping in multiple sclerosis
2019 41st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2019Traditional techniques based on diffusion MR imaging suffer from extremely low specificity in separating disease-related alterations in white matter microstructure, which can involve multiple phenomena including axonal loss, demyelination and changes in axonal size.

Axon diameter mapping is confounded by glial cells
ISMRM Annual MeetingThe specificity of strongly diffusion-weighted MRI to intra-axonal signal contributions to neuronal processes has always been presumed. Here we demonstrate empirically that strongly diffusion-weighted MRI data is also sensitive to a distinct isotropic compartment that may bias axon diameter estimates.

Correlation between intra-axonal T2 and histological axon diameter in rat brain
ISMRM Annual MeetingMotivation: Alteration of the axon radii has been previously linked with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurologic pathologies. The possibility of resolving submicrometric axon diameter yields the potential to open new diagnostic avenues. Goal(s): Validation of the previously presented surface-based relaxation model, assessing the feasibility of ...
