Azithromycin is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. It is derived from erythromycin, with a methyl-substituted nitrogen atom incorporated into the lactone ring, thus making the lactone ring 15-membered. It prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their protein synthesis.

Azithromycin and clarithromycin
Medical Clinics of North America, 1995Azithromycin and clarithromycin are alternatives to conventional macrolides in the routine treatment of many dermatologic, upper respiratory, and lower respiratory tract infections. In this role as alternative therapy, they are better tolerated, less toxic, and more convenient to take, although at a greater cost to the patient.
