The contribution of counselling to stress reduction at work: the case of the national health service [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
This study was undertaken as a means to explore whether or not a counselling service had a role to play in the reduction of stress in the National Health Service (NHS).

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Photoelastic analysis of stress generated by Connecticut Intrusion Arch (CIA)

open access: yesDental Press Journal of Orthodontics
Objective: The present in vitro study evaluated, by means of the photoelastic technique, the effects generated by the Connecticut Intrusion Arch (CIA), with a 90o bend on the distal surface of molar tubes and using the 4 x 2 appliance on the anterior ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Psychological stress and vascular disturbances in Rosacea

open access: yes, 2008
Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder, characterized by redness and flushing of the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. It has been proposed that rosacea is a result of frequent blushing (Miller, 1921; Klaber & Whittkower, 1939).

Determination of C2 stress index of back-to-back welded piping bends using finite element method

open access: yes, 2006
In current ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the C2 stress index for back-to-back elbows welded together is taken as the product of the C2 index of the elbow and the C2 index of the girth butt weld.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Three-dimensional finite element back analysis method for mechanical parameters of surge chamber under complicated geological condition

open access: yes工程科学与技术, 2012
:In the construction process of underground tunnels’ three-dimensional finite element simulation, the numerical results are effected by crustal stress and rock mass mechanical parameters.
