Bacterial soft rot of tomato in plastic greenhouses in Crete
Annals of Applied Biology, 1987SUMMARYDuring recent years a new disease has been noticed on tomatoes grown in Polythene greenhouses in Crete. Early symptoms are yellowing of the lower leaves, and a yellow brown discoloration of the pith and stem xylem. As leaves wilt and die there is progressive yellowing towards the top of the plants.

The incidence of decay and factors affecting bacterial soft rot of potatoes
American Potato Journal, 1973The incidence of tuber decay in rail car shipments of potatoes from the State of Washington was determined from 1965 to 1969 inclusive. Reinspection certificates revealed that 7.9% of the rail cars of potatoes shipped during this period were rejected due to tuber defects; tuber decay accounted for 63% of these rejected cars.

1997Soft rot is a form of microbiological wood degradation caused by fungi. The term ‘soft rot’ was originally proposed by Savory (1954) to be used for ‘decay caused by cellulose-destroying microfungi to distinguish it from the brown and white rots caused by wood-destroying basidiomycetes’.
