New type non-lantibiotic bacteriocins: circular and leaderless bacteriocins

Beneficial Microbes, 2012
Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides that are ribosomally synthesised by bacteria. Bacteriocins produced by Gram-positive bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria, are under focus as the next generation of safe natural biopreservatives and as therapeutic alternatives to antibiotics.

(1951, 1952), Polonskaya (1952) and Guillot (1958) were among the first investigators reporting on antibacterial activity associated with Lactobacillus spp. (Lb. acidophilus, Lb. delbrueckii subsp. lactis, Lb. helveticus).

Bacteriocin production and sensitivity

Folia Microbiologica, 2004
Using an overlay test the production of bacteriocin-like activity and resistance was found in 6 of the total of 7 isolates (5 enterococcal and 2 streptococcal). The majority of strains were sensitive to all bacteriocin producers tested. After acetone precipitation, bacteriocin precipitates were tested for thermal stability.
