Engineering of soluble bacteriorhodopsin
Analogues of membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin are reported that are soluble and stable, bind retinal and exhibit photocycles under illumination, highlighting the power of modern protein engineering approaches.

Excited-state dynamics of bacteriorhodopsin
Near infrared emission of bacteriorhodopsin at neutral pH and at room temperature was characterized by a large Stokes shift. This characteristic was lost in an acidic pH (approximately pH 2) where a remarkable enchancement (more than 10 times) in the fluorescence quantum yield accompanied the red shift in the main absorption band.

Probing a polar cluster in the retinal binding pocket of bacteriorhodopsin by a chemical design approach [PDF]
Bacteriorhodopsin has a polar cluster of amino acids surrounding the retinal molecule, which is responsible for light harvesting to fuel proton pumping.

DISPLACEMENT CURRENT IN BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES [PDF]
The functioning of some important membrane bound enzymes of the living systems is connected with charge translocation. A method has been elaborated to measure the displacement current due to the motion of protons on light excitation ...
