Extraction and Evaluation of Outer Membrane Vesicles from Two Important Gut Microbiota Members, Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron

open access: yesCell Journal, 2020
Objective: The gastrointestinal tract (GI) is colonized by a complex microbial community of gut microbiota. Bacteroides spp. have significant roles in gut microbiota and they host interactions by various mechanisms, including outer membrane vesicle ...

Hadza Prevotella require diet-derived microbiota-accessible carbohydrates to persist in mice

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: Industrialization has transformed the gut microbiota, reducing the prevalence of Prevotella relative to Bacteroides. Here, we isolate Bacteroides and Prevotella strains from the microbiota of Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, a population with

Nanocellulose Alleviates Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy via Gut Microbiota‐Mediated Bile Acid Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nanocellulose, derived from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) through sulfuric acid hydrolysis or mechanical grinding to produce CNC or CNF, was tested in a rat ICP model. Particularly, CNF improved gut microbiota composition, reduced secondary bile acid metabolism, and restored bile acid homeostasis through modulation of the gut–liver axis.

Optimal Algorithm for Gut Microbiota Differentiation: A Pilot Study of Adolescents with Different Body Weights

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Scholar
Background: The enterotype concept allows the differentiation of gut microbiota in relation to individual characteristics and is determined by the genetics and external stressors of the host.

Fluorogenic Coupled Assays Reveal Catalytic Properties, Inhibition Constants and Cellular Location of Mucin‐Active Carbohydrate Sulfatases

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We report plate‐based coupled assays to rapidly and quantitatively determine the activity and selectivity of mucin‐active carbohydrate sulfatases. This fluorogenic assay further enables inhibitor identification and allows determination of (sub‐)cellular location. ABSTRACT Sulfated glycans play a central role in human health and influence cell signaling,

Bacteroides ovatus ATCC 8483 monotherapy is superior to traditional fecal transplant and multi-strain bacteriotherapy in a murine colitis model

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2019
Background and aims Bacteriotherapy aimed at addressing dysbiosis may be therapeutic for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs). We sought to determine if defined Bacteroides-based bacteriotherapy could be an effective and consistent alternative to fecal ...

Icariin Enhances the Enzymatic Activity of N‐acetylgalactosaminidase to Augment Akkermansia Abundance in Gut Microbiota for Improved PD‐1 Blockade Efficacy in Tumor Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Icariin promoted the growth of Akk by enhancing the activity of N‐acetylgalactosaminidase (Amuc_0920), which enhanced mucin utilization and provided a favorable nutrient environment for bacterial growth. This icariin‐mediated enrichment of Akk further reshaped the tumor microenvironment and promoted CD8+ T cell infiltration, ultimately synergizing with
