The urinary phenolic acid profile varies between younger and older adults after a polyphenol-rich meal despite limited differences in in vitro colonic catabolism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose: To investigate whether age influences colonic polyphenol metabolism. Methods: Healthy participants, younger (n = 8; 23–43 years) and older (n = 13; 51–76 years), followed a 3-day low-polyphenol diet (LPD) and a 3-day high-polyphenol diet ...

Dissecting the Ecological Structure of Health and Disease in the Global Gut Microbiome

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We introduce Wiredancer, a framework that identifies three continuous ecological factors of the gut microbiota. These factors exhibit distinct patterns across health and disease, jointly capturing disrupted ecological stability and offering a new perspective for precision diagnostics and therapeutic strategies.

Gemella morbillorum Promotes Colorectal Carcinogenesis: LPBDCP‐Mediated Invasion Activates Ras Signaling and Destabilizes p53

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes colorectal cancer (CRC) tumorigenesis. A global fecal metagenomic analysis identified Gemella morbillorum as a key contributor to the CRC‐associated microbiota. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that Gemella morbillorum is enriched in CRC tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues.

Intestinal microbiota of patients with bacterial infection of the respiratory tract treated with amoxicillin

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases
The intestinal tract harbors a huge diversity of metabolically-active aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that interact, forming a complex ecosystem. This microbiota has an important role in human metabolism, nutrition, immunity, and protection against ...

Structural genomics analysis of uncharacterized protein families overrepresented in human gut bacteria identifies a novel glycoside hydrolase. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BackgroundBacteroides spp. form a significant part of our gut microbiome and are well known for optimized metabolism of diverse polysaccharides. Initial analysis of the archetypal Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron genome identified 172 glycosyl hydrolases and

Multi‐Enzyme Mimetic Molybdenum Nitride Nanozymes Reshape Subgingival Microenvironment for Synergistic Periodontitis Therapy via ROS Regulation and Microbiome Remodeling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease initiated and sustained by plaque microorganisms and host immune response, remains an intractable oral disease and a leading cause of tooth loss worldwide. Traditional mechanical debridement and adjunctive antibiotic or antiseptic therapy often shows limited efficacy due to the complex anatomical ...
