Atypical myopathy in 2 Bactrian camels

Atypical myopathy (AM) is an acute seasonal rhabdomyolysis seen primarily in equids, caused by the ingestion of sycamore maple samaras containing hypoglycin A (HGA) and methylenecyclopropyl-glycine (MCPG). Toxic metabolites inhibit acyl-CoA dehydrogenases and enoyl-CoA hydratases, causing selective hyaline degeneration of type I muscle fibers.

The Nerve Supply to the Orbit of the Bactrian Camel

The Bactrian camel is an important domestic animal in some desert and semi-desert areas of the world, but there is no detailed description of the nervous supply to the orbit in this animal. In this study, 10 heads of adult Bactrian camels were collected and the nerves supplying the orbit were examined grossly.

The male karyotype came from lymphocyte cultures and was donated by Dr. Lucien Koulischer, Belgium, and the female karyotype came from lung cultures donated by Dr. David A. Hungerford, Philadelphia. Pairing is arbitrary and classification of the chromosomes is difficult as in other camelids. Many acrocentrics possess short arms and many have satellites.

Abstract A comprehensive review on Chinese Bactrian camel milk composition, properties, nutrition value was provided. The review indicated that the mean values of Bactrian camel milk composition were as follows: protein, 3.96%; lactose, 4.50%; fat, 5.32; ash, 0.83%; total solids, 14.52%.

Pythium insidiosum, an aquatic oomycete, causes chronic lesions in the skin and digestive tract of multiple species. A captive-bred Bactrian camel ( Camelus bactrianus) showed clinical signs of lethargy and weight loss in a clinical course of 30 days, with no response to treatment.
