Anserine, Balenine, and Ergothioneine: Impact of Histidine-Containing Compounds on Exercise Performance—A Narrative Review [PDF]

open access: yesNutrients
Histidine is an amino acid which plays a critical role in protein synthesis, muscle buffering during anaerobic exercise, and antioxidation. It also acts as a precursor to carnosine, a dipeptide that enhances physical performance by being present in fast-contracting muscle fibers and contributing to buffering capacity. Recent studies have examined other

No Effect of Acute Balenine Supplementation on Maximal and Submaximal Exercise Performance in Recreational Cyclists

open access: yesInternational Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, 2023
Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) and its methylated analogues anserine and balenine are highly concentrated endogenous dipeptides in mammalian skeletal muscle that are implicated in exercise performance. Balenine has a much better bioavailability and stability in human circulation upon acute ingestion, compared to carnosine and anserine.

Quantification of Histidine-Containing Dipeptides in Dolphin Serum Using a Reversed-Phase Ion-Pair High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Method

open access: yesSeparations, 2021
The quantification of histidine-containing dipeptides (anserine, carnosine, and balenine) in serum might be a diagnostic tool to assess the health condition of animals.
