An investigation on the structure and group vibrations of balenine molecule by matrix isolation IR spectroscopy, DFT and MP2 based calculations

open access: yesSpectrochimica Acta - Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 2022
Stable conformers of neutral balenine were scanned through molecular dynamics simulations and energy minimizations using Allinger's MM2 force field. For each of the found minimum-energy conformers, geometry optimization and thermochemistry calculations were performed by using B3LYP, MP2, G3MP2B3 methods, 6-31G(d), 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pvTZ basis ...

Validation of a Method for the Determination of Balenine/Ophidine in Whale

open access: yesJournal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, 2017
Abstract The aim of this study was to develop and validate a method for the determination of balenine/ophidine (hereafter referred to as “balenine”) in whale extracts and muscle samples from Balaenoptera acutorostrata. Further, the goal was to evaluate the method’s applicability for the determination of other histidine-containing ...

Balenine, imidazole dipeptide, induces activation of superoxide dismutase in myotubes

Fisheries Science, 2021
Balenine is one of the endogenous imidazole dipeptides. It is composed of beta-alanine and 3-methyl-l-histidine, which exist mainly in the muscles and the brain. The exact biological properties of balenine are still not well known, although the antioxidant activity of carnosine, another imidazole dipeptide, is known.

Isolation of balenine from opah (Lampris megalopsis) muscle and comparison of antioxidant and iron-chelating activities with other major imidazole dipeptides

Food Chemistry, 2021
Balenine (Bal) in opah muscle was extracted using hot water and purified by ion-exchange chromatography and recrystallization to provide 41 g of over 95% pure Bal from 1 kg of opah muscle. The structure of purified Bal was identical to that of an authentic Bal standard by NMR analysis.

Safety Evaluation and Physiological Function of Dietary Balenine Derived From Opah Lampris guttatus on Skeletal Muscle of Mice

International Journal of Peptide Research and Therapeutics, 2021
Balenine is one of the endogenous imidazole dipeptides, mainly found in the muscle of marine animals. In this study we focused on the safety evaluation and physiological function of dietary balenine derived from opah Lampris guttatus in skeletal muscle of mice. There were no significant differences among different concentrations (0–1%) of balenine diet
