Expression of the Bar Gene Confers Herbicide Resistance in Transgenic Lettuce

Resistance to bialaphos, a broad-spectrum herbicide, was introduced into Lactuca sativa cv. Evola by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. A. tumefaciens strains 0310 and 1310, both carrying the bialaphos resistance (bar) and neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII) genes, were used for transformation.

[Toxicity of anti-herbicide gene (BAR) transgenic rice].

In order to evaluate the safety of anti-herbicide gene(BAR) transgenic rice, acute toxicity experiments, mutation experiments and a 30-day feeding test were conducted. The results were as follows: The oral LD50 for mice and rats was larger than 21.5 g/kg BW and no mutation was found.

The Mendelian trait, eye shape, was chosen in the study. The bar eye (Bar) shape was compared to the round eye shape.
