Unital operads, monoids, monads, and bar constructions

open access: yesAdvances in Mathematics
We give a description of unital operads in a symmetric monoidal category as monoids in a monoidal category of unital $Λ$-sequences. This is a new variant of Kelly's old description of operads as monoids in the monoidal category of symmetric sequences.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma carriage in pregnant women: the prevalence of transmission from mother to newborn

open access: yesBMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, 2020
Background Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma have been extensively studied for their possible impact on pregnancy, and their involvement in newborn diseases. This work examined Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma carriage among gravidas women and newborns in Israel, as ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Orthogonal vertical velocity dispersion distributions produced by bars

open access: yes, 2017
In barred galaxies, the contours of stellar velocity dispersions ($\sigma$) are generally expected to be oval and aligned with the orientation of bars. However, many double-barred (S2B) galaxies exhibit distinct $\sigma$ peaks on the minor axis of inner ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Adsorption Mechanism and Uptake of Methane in Covalent Organic Frameworks: Theory and Experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We determined the methane (CH_4) uptake (at 298 K and 1 to 100 bar pressure) for a variety of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), including both two-dimensional (COF-1, COF-5, COF-6, COF-8, and COF-10) and three-dimensional (COF-102, COF-103, COF-105 ...

Flows and joins of metric spaces

open access: yes, 2005
We introduce the functor * which assigns to every metric space X its symmetric join *X. As a set, *X is a union of intervals connecting ordered pairs of points in X. Topologically, *X is a natural quotient of the usual join of X with itself. We define an

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

In Vitro Activity of Tedizolid, Dalbavancin, and Ceftobiprole Against Clostridium difficile

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Background:Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a major nosocomial pathogen that colonizes in the human gut. Recently, the U.S. FDA approved three new antimicrobial agents against gram-positive bacteria: Tedizolid, Dalbavancin, and Ceftobiprole.
