Automatic Classification of Planetary Surfaces Using Autoencoders With Applications to Dunes in the North Polar Erg of Mars

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract The study of planetary surface processes has traditionally relied on the manual interpretation of spacecraft images. While manual image analysis methods are robust and well‐established, they become impractical when the volume of available data is large and may introduce observer bias.

Terrestrial Analogs to Titan for Geophysical Research

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Saturn's moon Titan exhibits remarkable parallels to the Earth in many geophysical and geological processes not found elsewhere in the solar system at the present day. These include a nitrogen atmosphere with a condensible gas—methane—replacing the Earth's water, leading to an active meteorology with rainfall and surface manifestations ...

Variations in downslope activity and bottom current dynamics in a land‐detached submarine channel system since the Last Glacial Maximum

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 3, Page 620-644, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The Gollum Channel System is a land‐detached large‐scale canyon‐channel system situated offshore southwest Ireland on the Northeast Atlantic margin. The system has been considered inactive with downslope gravity flows since the last glacial period, but geophysical data in some of its branches do suggest Holocene activity.

CNN training of satellite images for "Detection and tracking barchan dunes using Artificial Intelligence"

open access: yes, 2023
This is part of the dataset concerning the YOLO training of satellite images (Barchan dunes). In this dataset, you find the "YOLOv8 train" folder that contains the structure and images obtained from NASA/JPL-Caltech/UArizona and we saved the ...

Migration of Barchan Dunes in Qatar–Controls of the Shamal, Teleconnections, Sea-Level Changes and Human Impact

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
Barchan dune fields are a dominant landscape feature in SE Qatar and a key element of the peninsula’s geodiversity. The migration of barchan dunes is mainly controlled by dune size, wind patterns, vegetation cover and human impact.

High-precision remote sensing mapping of aeolian sand landforms based on deep learning algorithms

open access: yesOpen Geosciences, 2022
It is significant to adopt deep learning algorithms and higher-resolution remote sensing images in mapping large-scale and high-precision of aeolian landform. In this study, the western part of Horqin Sandy Land was taken as the study area.

Domed‐rim microbial polygons and their preservation potential

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 12, Issue 1, February 2026.
Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) derive through interactions between minerals and microorganisms. We define a domed‐rim MISS, morphologically distinct from abiotic mud cracks and demonstrate its potential for long‐term preservation. These structures represent promising biosignatures in ancient environments on Earth and potentially Mars.

On the genesis and evolution of barchan dunes: morphodynamics

open access: yes, 2017
Barchan dunes are crescent-shaped formations of sand that can dominate both desert and subaqueous landscapes when the supply of sand is scarce. Because of the complexity and scale of the underlying phenomena, the mechanisms governing the entire process ...
