Sensation, movement and learning in the absence of barrel cortex [PDF]
For many of our senses, the role of the cerebral cortex in detecting stimuli is controversial1-17. Here we examine the effects of both acute and chronic inactivation of the primary somatosensory cortex in mice trained to move their large facial whiskers to detect an object by touch and respond with a lever to obtain a water reward.

The barrel cortex contains the somatosensory representation of the whiskers on the face of the rodent and forms an early stage of cortical processing for tactile information. It is an area of great importance for understanding how the cerebral cortex works because the cortical columns that form the basic building blocks of the cerebral cortex can be ...

Ministrokes in Rat Barrel Cortex
Stroke, 1995Background and Purpose Many stroke models in rats are based on occlusion of the middle cerebral artery, which supplies a significant portion of multifunctional cortical and deep structures in the cerebral hemisphere. The purpose of this study was to develop a model for direct observation in real time of blood flow in and around

Barrel Cortex: What is it Good for?
Neuroscience, 2018The rodent whisker system, with barrel cortex as its most prominent structure, has evolved into a powerful model system to study sensory processing. However, despite the vast amount of data collected on barrel cortex neural activity patterns, as well as its circuitry and plasticity, the precise behavioral and cognitive operations for which this ...

Development of the barrels and barrel field in the somatosensory cortex of the mouse
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1977AbstractBarrels of the PMBSF of the mouse somatosensory cortex become apparent in Nissl‐stained tangential sections simultaneously, on the fourth postnatal day. At this time they are miniatures of those in the adult and are situated in the deepest sublamina of the trilaminar cortical plate.

Over the past two decades, the barrel cortex has emerged as a major model system for the analysis of the structure, function, and experience-dependent plasticity of neocortical circuits. Driven by the availability of transgenic animals expressing fluorescent proteins and protein effectors in specific cell types, circuit studies of the barrel cortex are

Functional Asymmetries in the Rodent Barrel Cortex
Somatosensory & Motor Research, 1991Neurophysiological and 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) studies of the rodent whisker barrel cortex have demonstrated asymmetries in its functional organization. To examine the possibility that the activity gradients observed in metabolic studies can be attributed to subtle rostral-caudal and dorsal-ventral asymmetries in electrophysiologically measured surround ...

Development of the whisker-to-barrel cortex system
Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2018This review provides an overview on the development of the rodent whisker-to-barrel cortex system from late embryonic stage to the end of the first postnatal month. During this period the system shows a remarkable transition from a mostly genetic-molecular driven generation of crude connectivity, providing the template for activity-dependent structural

LTP in the barrel cortex of adult rats
NeuroReport, 1995Intrinsic circuitry in the barrel cortex has been shown to be readily modifiable in response to changes in the patterns of sensory input, even in adult animals. It is believed that sensory experience modifies synaptic circuits by imposing specific patterns of repetitive presynaptic and postsynaptic coactivity, i.e. by LTP-like processes.

Barrels and septa: Separate circuits in rat barrel field cortex
The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1999The neural circuitry within sensory cortex determines its functional properties, and different solutions have evolved for integrating the activity that arises from an array of sensory inputs to cortex. In rodent, circumscribed receptors, such as whiskers, are represented in somatic sensory (S-I) cortex in islands of cells in layer IV called "barrels ...
