Nonlinear Encoding of Tactile Patterns in the Barrel Cortex
Journal of Neurophysiology, 2004Cells in the rodent barrel cortex respond to vibrissa deflection with a brief excitatory component and a longer suppressive component. The response to a given deflection is thus scaled because of suppression induced by a preceding deflection, causing the neuronal response to be linked to the temporal properties of the peripheral stimulus.

Intrinsic inhibitory pathways in mouse barrel cortex
NeuroReport, 1996The organization of intrinsic connections in the mouse somatosensory cortex was studied by combining tract-tracing and immunocytochemical techniques. Injections of HRP or fluorescent beads were made into the supragranular or infragranular layers of the posteriomedial barrel subfield.

Microcircuit dynamics of map plasticity in barrel cortex
Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2014Functional reorganization of the whisker map in rodent barrel cortex has long served as a model for cortical plasticity following changes in sensory experience. Given the heterogeneity of neuronal response properties in neocortex, it has remained unclear how individual neurons in the cortical microcircuit are affected.

Immediate-early gene expression in the barrel cortex
Somatosensory & Motor Research, 2006Since their detection in the early 1980s immediate-early genes (most of them being inducible transcription factors) have been regarded as molecular keys to the orchestration of late-effector genes that ultimately would enable functional and structural adaptation of the brain to changing external and internal demands.

Synaptic Organization of the Barrel Cortex
1995The inception of the burgeoning field of barrel cortex neurobiology can be traced to the influential publication by Woolsey and Van der Loos (1970). Although barrel-like structures were previously described in the somatosensory cortices of rodents (e.g., Droogleever Fortuyn, 1914; Lorente de No, 1938; Woolsey, 1967), Woolsey and Van der Loos were the ...
