Human Intestinal Barrier Function in Health and Disease

open access: yesClinical and Translational Gastroenterology, 2016
The gastrointestinal tract consists of an enormous surface area that is optimized to efficiently absorb nutrients, water, and electrolytes from food. At the same time, it needs to provide a tight barrier against the ingress of harmful substances, and ...

Emerging role of ARHGAP29 in melanoma cell phenotype switching

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study gives first insights into the role of ARHGAP29 in malignant melanoma. ARHGAP29 was revealed to be connected to tumor cell plasticity, promoting a mesenchymal‐like, invasive phenotype and driving tumor progression. Further, it modulates cell spreading by influencing RhoA/ROCK signaling and affects SMAD2 activity. Rho GTPase‐activating protein

Evanescent states in 2D electron systems with spin-orbit interaction and spin-dependent transmission through a barrier

open access: yes, 2007
We find that the total spectrum of electron states in a bounded 2D electron gas with spin-orbit interaction contains two types of evanescent states lying in different energy ranges.

Recent Advances on Topical Application of Ceramides to Restore Barrier Function of Skin

open access: yesCosmetics, 2019
Human skin is the largest organ of the body and is an effective physical barrier keeping it from environmental conditions. This barrier function of the skin is based on stratum corneum, located in the uppermost skin.

Gut microbiota diversity is prognostic in metastatic hormone receptor‐positive breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this exploratory study, we investigated the relationship between the gut microbiota and outcome in patients with metastatic hormone receptor‐positive breast cancer, treated in a randomized clinical trial with chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy in combination with immune checkpoint blockade.

Measurements of Growth Rates of (0001) Ice Crystal Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present measurements of growth rates of the (0001) facet surface of ice as a function of water vapor supersaturation over the temperature range $-2$ $\geq T\geq -40$ C.

Intestinal Barrier Function in Gluten-Related Disorders

open access: yesNutrients, 2019
Gluten-related disorders include distinct disease entities, namely celiac disease, wheat-associated allergy and non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity. Despite having in common the contact of the gastrointestinal mucosa with components of wheat and other ...

Modeling hepatic fibrosis in TP53 knockout iPSC‐derived human liver organoids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study developed iPSC‐derived human liver organoids with TP53 gene knockout to model human liver fibrosis. These organoids showed elevated myofibroblast activation, early disease markers, and advanced fibrotic hallmarks. The use of profibrotic differentiation medium further amplified the fibrotic signature seen in the organoids.

Impaired intestinal barrier function in a mouse model of hyperuricemia

open access: yesMolecular Medicine Reports, 2019
Previous studies have demonstrated the effects of hyperuricemia on the damage to target organs, including the kidneys, joints and the heart. However, it is unclear whether hyperuricemia results in damage to the intestines.
