Tetrahymena Poc1 ensures proper intertriplet microtubule linkages to maintain basal body integrity

open access: yesMolecular Biology of the Cell, 2016
The symmetric triplet microtubules of basal bodies resist asymmetric forces produced by motile cilia. The Poc1 basal body stability factor promotes the symmetric linkages between triplet microtubules.

Cerebellum: an explanation for dystonia? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Dystonia is a movement disorder that is characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, abnormal movements and postures, as well as by non-motor symptoms, and is due to abnormalities in different brain areas.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is stimulated by red light irradiation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Light at different wavelengths has distinct effects on keratinocyte viability and metabolism. UVA light abrogates metabolic fluxes. Blue and green light have no effect on metabolic fluxes, while red light enhanced oxidative phosphorylation by promoting fatty acid oxidation. Keratinocytes are the primary constituents of sunlight‐exposed epidermis.

Naegleria: a classic model for de novo basal body assembly

open access: yesCilia, 2016
The amoeboflagellate Naegleria was one of the first organisms in which de novo basal body/centriole assembly was documented. When in its flagellate form, this single-celled protist has two flagella that are templated by two basal bodies.

Brain Weight and Life-Span in Primate Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
In haplorhine primates (tarsiers, monkeys, apes, and humans), there is a significant correlation between brain weight and maximum life-span when the effect of body size is removed.

Mechanism of basal-plane antiferromagnetism in the spin-orbit driven iridate Ba2IrO4 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
By ab initio many-body quantum chemistry calculations, we determine the strength of the symmetric anisotropy in the 5$d^5$ j $\approx$ 1/2 layered material Ba$_2$IrO$_4$.

Basal Body Components Exhibit Differential Protein Dynamics during Nascent Basal Body Assembly [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Biology of the Cell, 2009
Basal bodies organize cilia that are responsible for both mechanical beating and sensation. Nascent basal body assembly follows a series of well characterized morphological events; however, the proteins and their assembly dynamics for new basal body formation and function are not well understood.

The role of fibroblast growth factors in cell and cancer metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling regulates crucial signaling cascades that promote cell proliferation, survival, and metabolism. Therefore, FGFs and their receptors are often dysregulated in human diseases, including cancer, to sustain proliferation and rewire metabolism.

LRGUK-1 Is Required for Basal Body and Manchette Function during Spermatogenesis and Male Fertility

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2015
Male infertility affects at least 5% of reproductive age males. The most common pathology is a complex presentation of decreased sperm output and abnormal sperm shape and motility referred to as oligoasthenoteratospermia (OAT).
