Basal cell hyperplasia: an unusual diagnostic dilemma on prostate needle biopsies

Human Pathology, 2005
Basal cell hyperplasia (BCH) is a well-recognized entity on transurethral resection specimens, but it is an uncommon finding on prostatic needle biopsies, and the diagnostic difficulties with it have not been fully defined on this material. A 13-year (1991-2003) retrospective review of the consult files of one of the authors was performed. In all cases,

Florid basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate: a histological, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical analysis

Human Pathology, 2003
Basal cell proliferation is a common finding in a benign hyperplastic prostate gland. Occasionally, basal cell hyperplasia is so florid that it can be mistaken for prostatic adenocarcinoma. We characterized histological, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical features of florid basal cell hyperplasia from transurethral resections (n = 11) and ...

Basal Cell Hyperplasia of the Prostate

Journal of Urology, 1983
Basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate is a rare, benign lesion that often has been misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Thirteen cases of basal cell hyperplasia were reviewed. All of the patients were over 60 years of age (range 63-83) and all had benign prostatic hypertrophy in addition to basal cell hyperplasia.

Follicular Basal Cell Hyperplasia Overlying Dermatofibroma

The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 1997
Follicular basal cell hyperplasia (FBCH) overlying dermatofibroma represents aborted or impeded pilar differentiation. Historically, this hyperplasia has been misinterpreted as basal cell carcinoma. In a large series of dermatofibroma (258 cases), those that contained primitive or malformed follicular structures over the lesion (59 cases) were compared

Atypical Basal Cell Hyperplasia of the Prostate

The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 1992
Basal cell hyperplasia classically has been described as having bland cytologic features. During the past 2 years, we have seen 12 cases (11 in consultation) with atypical features that were confused with adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Eleven of these 12 cases contained prominent nucleoli mimicking carcinoma; in the 12th case, nuclei were enlarged ...

Basal cell hyperplasia of prostate: An elusive lesion?

Urology, 1992
We report a case of basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate accompanying benign prostatic hypertrophy. The histogenesis of the basal cells as well as the histologic features and differential diagnosis of basal cell hyperplasia are reviewed.

Atypical Basal Cell Hyperplasia of the Prostate

The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 1993
Prostatic basal cell proliferations range from focal basal cell hyperplasia (BCH) to florid adenoid basal cell tumor (ABCT). We reviewed 36 cases of basal cell proliferation to evaluate the architectural and cytologic spectrum of these lesions and identified four distinct patterns by light microscopy: BCH, 12 cases, including two cases with stromal ...

Smoking Is Associated With Basal Cell Hyperplasia on Prostate Biopsy Specimens

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 2021
Abstract Objectives To the best of our knowledge, no study has analyzed the association between cigarette smoking and prostate basal cell proliferation. Therefore, we sought to evaluate whether smoking status is associated with the presence of basal cell hyperplasia (BCH).

Pseudocarcinomatous Hyperplasia With Follicular Differentiation Overlying Basal Cell Carcinoma

The American Journal of Dermatopathology, 2009
We present a series of 25 cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with overlying cytologically bland epidermal hyperplasia and cyst formation. Eight of the BCCs were nodular and 11 were infiltrative. Immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67 and cytokeratin 17 (CK17) was performed to evaluate the proliferative and differentiation characteristics of the ...

Basal Cell Carcinoma-Associated Paratumoral Follicular and Epidermal Hyperplasia

The American Journal of Dermatopathology, 2010
Reactive epithelial hyperplasia is a well-known phenomenon which occurs adjacent to certain neoplasms such as cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma, granular cell tumor, Spitz nevus, and melanoma. We report 46 cases of paratumoral follicular and epidermal hyperplasia associated with basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
