A short proof of an identity of Sylvester

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1999
We present two short proofs of an identity found by Sylvester and rediscovered by Louck. The first proof is an elementary version of Knuth's proof and is analogous to Macdonald's proof of a related identity of Milne.

Cellular Stress, Inflammation and Barrier Damage in Gut Epithelial Cells Caused by Aspartame

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study shows that aspartame, at dietary‐relevant doses, induces cytotoxicity, cellular distress associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, DNA replication and repair mechanism disturbance culminating in epithelial barrier damage.

Orthogonal Basic Hypergeometric Laurent Polynomials

open access: yesSymmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications, 2012
The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in$x = cos heta$, which are given as a terminating $_4phi_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{iheta}$, which are given as a ...

Do temporary changes in earnings caused by mean reversion affect firms’ refinancing decisions?

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract We develop a dynamic two‐stage trade‐off model with refinancing when earnings are mean reverting. Our model predicts a negative relation between profitability and leverage at refinancing due to conservative debt increases. With multiple rounds of refinancing, the leverage–profitability relation may turn positive when firms have substantial ...

Cellular microenvironment of erythropoietin‐producing cells in hypoxic and injured mouse kidneys

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The main sources of circulating erythropoietin (Epo) in the adult are kidney Norn cells, a recently identified interstitial cell type capable of becoming renal Epo‐producing (REP) cells following a local decrease in tissue oxygenation. REP cells are restricted to small clusters in the corticomedullary border region, suggesting that their ...

Count Random Variables

open access: yesEncyclopedia
The observation of randomness patterns serves as guidance for the craft of probabilistic modelling. The most used count models—Binomial, Poisson, Negative Binomial—are the discrete Morris’ natural exponential families whose variance is at most quadratic ...

The Role of the Gut Microbiome in the Complex Network of Frailty Syndrome and Associated Comorbidities in Aging

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study analyzed gut microbiota in older adults with and without Frailty Syndrome by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics. Frailty was associated with altered microbial composition, metabolic functions, and increased antimicrobial resistance, whereas non‐frail individuals showed healthier profiles.

MSC‐Derived Exosomal lnc‐AGT‐3: A Novel Anti‐Angiogenic Target in Age‐Related Macular Degeneration Through p53 Signaling Pathway

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 2, February 2026.
MSC‐derived exosomes deliver lnc‐AGT‐3 to vascular endothelial cells, where it binds hnRNP K in the nucleus. This interaction inhibits p53 ubiquitination, enhancing p53 stabilization and transcriptional activation of anti‐angiogenic targets TSP1. Consequently, p53‐mediated signaling is potentiated, effectively suppressing choroidal neovascularization ...

Factorization of Basic Hypergeometric Series

open access: yesSymmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications
The general problem of the factorization of a basic hypergeometric series is presented and discussed. The case of the general $_2\psi_2$ series is examined in detail. Connections are found with the theory of basic hypergeometric series on root systems. Alternative proofs of several well-known summation and transformation formulae, including Gustafson's

Reduced Proteasome Degradation of HSF‐1 Shifts Protein Stress Management With Age in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 2, February 2026.
Ageing C. elegans prioritises chronic protein stress protection over acute stress response by coordinating HSF‐1 activity. Decreased PBS‐7 binding in aged worms reduces HSF‐1 degradation, enhancing its ability to upregulate protective factors against accumulating protein aggregates while simultaneously suppressing its activation under acute heat shock.
