BCAA Metabolism and Insulin Sensitivity – Dysregulated by Metabolic Status?

Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2018
AbstractBranched‐chain amino acids (BCAAs) appear to influence several synthetic and catabolic cellular signaling cascades leading to altered phenotypes in mammals. BCAAs are most notably known to increase protein synthesis through modulating protein translation, explaining their appeal to resistance and endurance athletes for muscle hypertrophy ...

The effect of BCAA supplementation upon the immune response of triathletes

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2000
Intense long-duration exercise could lead to immune suppression through a decrease in the circulating level of plasma glutamine. The decrease in plasma glutamine concentration as a consequence of intense long-duration exercise was reversed, in some cases, by supplementing the diet of the athletes with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA).

BCAA-enriched snack improves nutritional state of cirrhosis

Nutrition, 2007
A late evening snack improves the catabolic state in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis. We tested whether long-term (3 mo) late evening snacking that included a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA)-enriched nutrient mixture produces a better nutritional state and better quality of life than ordinary food in patients with hepatitis C virus-positive ...

Comment to Oral BCAA Trials

1984
Three papers presented during the meeting concerned double blind placebo controlled trials evaluating the effect of oral branched chain amino acids (BCAA) on portal-ystemic encephalopathy (PSE). Two of these carefully designed trials1,2 arrived at the conclusion that BCAA do have a favorable influence on low grade and latent PSE.

Nocturnal energy and BCAA supplementation in patients with liver cirrhosis

Hepatology Research, 2004
Patients with liver cirrhosis have protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and run short of proteins and energy. Protein deficiency leads to hypoalbuminemia, which induces peritoneal effusion and edema. Energy deficiency decreases fat and muscle mass and causes muscle weakness, which decreases the QOL of these patients.

Dietary intake of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), serum BCAAs, and cardiometabolic risk markers among community-dwelling adults

European Journal of Nutrition
To investigate the associations between dietary/serum branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and cardiometabolic risk markers. In a cohort of 2791 participants, diet and cardiometabolic risk markers were measured twice at baseline in overall participants and after 1-year in a subset of 423 participants.
